In a major breakthrough, the Jalandhar rural police have arrested four persons in connection with murderous assault on a kabaddi player.

The accused have been identified as Lakhwinder Singh, alias Khanna, of Nawa village, Donewal; Karan of Mohalla Akalpur Malsia; Ravi Kumar of Malsia and Nitansh, alias Nannu, also from Malsia.

Speaking to mediapersons, SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said the arrests happened following a special campaign launched against anti-social elements. He said a team of the Nakodar police achieved this breakthrough under the guidance of SP (Investigation) Jasrup Kaur Bath.

A special team, led by DSP Sukhpal Singh of Nakodar and SHO Baljinder Singh of Sadar Nakodar, carried out the operation.

On October 17, the accused allegedly attacked kabaddi player Simrandeep Singh of Nurpur Chatta, with sharp-edged weapons, causing serious injuries. The police have recovered two daggers used in the crime. A case was registered on October 24.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the dispute originated from social media posts which eventually led to the assault. The accused had been monitoring the victim’s movements before launching the attack.

The accused will be produced in a local court and police remand sought to further investigate the matter.

SSP Khakh reiterated the police’s zero tolerance against anti-social elements, emphasising that strict action would continue against those disturbing law and order in the district.
