In a major crackdown during Dasehra night, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, led by Commissioner Swapan Sharma, arrested 35 persons for drinking in public and violating other norms at PPR Market and Model Town market.

The late-night operation was aimed to curb disorderly behaviour during the festive celebrations, underscoring the police’s zero-tolerance policy.

Commissioner Sharma led the three-hour operation, which began at 7:30 pm and concluded around 10:30 pm, targeting violators engaged in drinking and other public disturbances.

Officers conducted thorough checks for traffic, parking and other violations, sending a strong message to those ignoring the law.

“No one will be allowed to break the law, especially during festival nights when public order is crucial,” said Sharma, adding that those caught flouting the rules will face strict action, no matter their status.

The police issued 14 traffic challans, impounded three vehicles and took preventive measures under Section 126/169 of the BNS.

The Commissioner of Police said the police force was committed to enforcing the law rigorously and warned that similar operations would continue in the coming days.

“This operation comes as part of a broader effort to maintain public safety during festivals, a time when large crowds gather in markets and public spaces”, he added.

He further vowed to carry out more crackdowns, especially on nights when violations are more likely due to festive celebrations.

“The swift action on Dasehra night sends a clear signal that the Jalandhar police will not tolerate any disruption of public peace, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the festivities in a safe and orderly manner”, Sharma said.
