Phagwara: Nakodar Sadar police arrested three drug peddlers on charges of smuggling and selling poppy husk after seizing a huge quantity of the banned drugs from their possession on Saturday night. Nakodar DSP Lakhwindar Singh Mall said the accused had been identified as Budh Singh, alias Sabi, Sukhwinder Singh, alias Sonu, and Amarjit Singh, alias Roda. The DSP said the accused were travelling in two vehicles (PB-32-L-9417 and PB-32-B-8077) in which 10 bags of poppy husk weighing 203 kilograms were loaded and were stopped and arrested at a special checking point manned by Sub-Inspector Jasbir Singh. The police impounded the vehicles and registered a case against the accused. OC

Staff shortage at Nurmahal BDPO

Phagwara: The Nurmahal block development and panchayat office (BDPO) and the Samiti office are facing severe staff shortage, which is hampering the routine functioning of the offices. The post of block development and panchayat officer is lying vacant. There are 15 posts of panchayat secretaries lying vacant in the block, out of which eight are vacant. Ten posts of gram sewaks are also vacant. Two sanctioned posts of junior engineer, one of accountant, two of clerks, one of driver, one of tax collector, one of accounts clerk, two of peon, one of watchman and one of patwari are lying vacant. The office superintendent said the complaint redress and official work were affected due to the staff shortage. OC

GOC interacts with veterans

Jalandhar: Lieutenant General Devendra Sharma, General Officer Commanding, Vajra Corps, held an interaction with veterans. The aim was to interact with the veterans in the Corps zone and reaffirm the commitment towards welfare of veterans. Around 160 veterans from Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Kapurthala, Beas, Bhogpur and Hoshiarpur attended the event at Jalandhar Cantonment. The GOC conveyed that welfare, safety and honour of the families of battle and physical casualties and veer naris remained their prime concern. The veterans interacted with Lt Gen Sharma and expressed their gratitude towards the Vajra Corps for providing them the opportunity to express their concerns. TNS

Man creates DC’s fake account

Nawanshahr: A case under Section 170 of the IPC and Section 66-D of the IT Act has been registered against a man for allegedly creating a WhatsApp account as Nawanshahr DC Navjot Pal Singh Randhawa and calling and messaging officials and citizens, asking them for favours. The accused has been identified as Arsad Ansari from Uttar Pradesh. According to the complaint filed with the SSP, Nawanshahr, the accused used the photograph of the Deputy Commissioner as the display picture on the fake account and would chat with people and ask for favours. The police have started investigation.
