2 groups clash at Kapurthala jail, four injured; old rivalry, say police

A clash broke out between two groups of convicts at the Kapurthala Central Jail yesterday night, leaving four inmates injured.

The injured have been identified as Simranjeet Singh of Amritsar, Vishal and Sunil from Lambra in Jalandhar and Mukesh from Rama Mandi in Jalandhar.

The clash took place around 8 pm last night when four men — two belonging to each faction —attacked each other on the first floor of the barrack 3/3.

The inmates used sharp iron nail/rod (retrieved from grills) to attack each other. Official said an old rivalry was the reason behind the clash.

Simranjeet, who was critically injured in the clash, has been referred to the Amritsar Medical College Amritsar.

While another injured inmate is undergoing treatment at the Kapurthala Civil Hospital, the remaining two inmates were sent back to the jail after administering first aid.

Kapurthala SP (Investigations) Sarabjit Rai said, “The men do not belong to any notable gang. They had an old rivalry with each other due to which the clash broke out. The injuries were inflicted through iron bars. Simranjeet is under treatment at the Amritsar Medical College. He is out of danger.”

An FIR has been registered against the four inmates under Section 42 of the Prisons Act and Sections 118 (1), 115 (2), 191 (3) and 190 of the BNS Act at the Kotwali police station.
