Continuing its crackdown on absconding criminals, the Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested two more Proclaimed Offenders (POs) who had been evading arrest for several years. The arrests come as part of a special drive against fugitives, under which 57 POs have been nabbed in the past three months from various locations.

The arrested accused have been identified as Gopi, a resident of Toti village falling under Sultanpur Lodhi police station in Kapurthala district, and Surjit Singh alias Ladi of Sindhar village under Lohian police station.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said the operation was executed under the supervision of SP (Investigation) Jasroop Kaur Bath and Shahkot DSP Onkar Singh Brar. "Our dedicated teams have been working meticulously to track these fugitives who had been changing locations to avoid arrest," said Khakh.

The police teams were led by SHOs of Mehatpur police station and Lohian police station. Using technical surveillance and human intelligence, the teams successfully traced and apprehended both accused in coordinated raids.

According to police records, Gopi was booked under Sections 21-61-85 of the NDPS Act at Shahkot police station in October 2019. The second accused, Surjit Singh, was wanted in a fraud case where he allegedly duped a youth of Rs 8 lakh on the pretext of sending him to America.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that both accused had been declared POs by the court of JMIC Nakodar after they failed to appear for court proceedings. "We will seek police remand of the accused to unearth their entire network and check for involvement in other cases," said the SSP.

"The drive against POs will continue with full force. Our teams are conducting raids at suspected hideouts across various states. The message is clear — no offender will be allowed to escape justice," SSP Khakh emphasised.
