The property tax wing of Jalandhar Municipal Corporation has recovered Rs 28 crore out of Rs 55 crore so far.
As taxpayers can avail 10 per cent rebate till September 30, the MC is collecting over Rs 1 crore property tax per day.
Officials said the office would also remain open on Saturday. “Till September 30, the taxpayers can pay pending amount,” said Bhupinder Singh, Superintendent, Property Tax wing, Jalandhar MC.
“Posters and awareness campaigns are being held to inform the residents that they can avail 10 per cent rebate if they pay property tax till September 30,” he said.
Last year, the department had collected Rs 43 crore. There are around 1.65 lakh taxable properties in the city, including residential and commercial.
The defaulters who have not paid the property tax have been served a notice under Section 112 of the Municipal Corporation Act. In case, they fail to file a reply within three days, a notice of sealing the property would be served under Section 138 of the Act. Once the property is sealed, it will only be handed over to the owner after the property tax is paid.
The process of sealing the properties is on, said an MC official, adding that with the implementation of unique ID under smart city project, collection of tax would become much easier.
