Action to be taken after probe

The incident is really unfortunate and departmental action has been initiated. The youths reportedly jumped the naka but the treatment they have been subjected to is unfortunate. Action will be taken on the basis of a probe. The matter is being looked into. — Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh, SSP

In the video, two men can be seen writhing in pain as a cop, alleged to be ASI Jaswinder Singh, punched them. The cop is seen kicking one of them repeatedly and the man lying on the ground, crying in pain.

While the police term the matter an issue of ‘road rage’ which escalated, the ASI’s action raises questions on the conduct of the men in uniform.

The police said the ASI was deputed at a naka in Bhogpur when three men on a bike jumped the naka and allegedly didn’t stop despite the police indications. Chasing the youths, the ASI caught them and beat up two of these youths. The incident took place on Saturday evening.

One of the youths has been identified as Ajay Kumar from Kapurthala. The youths in turn alleged that the police stopped them without any fault.

SSP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said, “The incident is unfortunate and departmental action has been initiated. It is known to be an issue of road rage. While the youths reportedly jumped the naka, the treatment the youths have been subjected to, is unfortunate. Action will be taken on the basis of a probe. The matter is being looked into. The ASI had also been transferred immediately.”
