Mehbooba, Lone criticise plea filed in Rajasthan court against Ajmer Dargah
Mainstream political leaders in Kashmir have raised concerns over a plea filed in Ajmer court alleging that the Ajmer Sharif dargah was built over a Hindu temple.
In a statement, Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti raised alarm over the “dangerous trajectory of communal polarization”, which she said was sparked by a controversial judgment delivered by a former Chief Justice of India.
Mufti blamed the judgment for “enabling the targeted surveys of minority religious sites, including mosques and shrines like the iconic Ajmer Sharif, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling to maintain the 1947 status quo.”
“The ripple effects of this decision have already surfaced, with the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, being a chilling consequence of the communal tensions, it has stoked,” said the former chief minister.
Mufti also took to X to express her concern, stating: “Thanks to a former Chief Justice of India, a Pandora’s box has been opened, sparking a contentious debate about minority religious places,” she said.
Mufti pointed out that this judgment aligns conveniently with the government’s divisive agenda, as minority communities are systematically isolated and their faiths undermined.
The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) led by Jailed MP Engineer Rashid has also expressed deep anguish over the recent controversy surrounding the Ajmer Dargah, terming it a “divisive and hate-driven issue that threatens the secular fabric of India.”
AIP’s chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi highlighted the alarming frequency of such incidents. “Every second day, we witness groups laying claims over mosques, dargahs and other religious establishments. This is not only shocking but also dangerous for the unity of our diverse society. Ajmer Dargah, with its 850-year-old legacy of peace and spirituality, should be above such baseless disputes,” he said.
“It is shocking to see how our courts are quick to take up hate-filled and divisive issues while critical matters like health, education and employment remain ignored. The way our country is heading is deeply concerning,” the statement said.
Handwara MLA and People’s Conference chief Sajad Lone also voiced concern over allowing survey of Ajmer Sharif Dargah in search of a hidden temple. While criticizing “the misplaced priorities and growing regression in Indian society,” Lone termed the suit another shocker.
