The Students Unions of Ladakh, supported by the Merchant Association, Leh, religious organisations and political parties, observed a half-day bandh in Leh today to protest against the J&K Bank recruitment policy.

All shops, including restaurants, remained shut for the half day in support of the bandh call given by the unions.

Kargil district observed the bandh for the whole day, forcing routine activities to come to a standstill in support of the bandh call.

Jammu & Kashmir Bank had advertised posts for 1,600 banking associates and 350 probationary officers and July 24 was the last date for filling the online forms. However, applicants from Ladakh were not eligible to apply due to the lack of the domicile certificates with them.

Jigmet Paljor, students’ representative and coordinator, said the bank should have made alternative arrangements to accommodate applicants from Ladakh or should have postponed the recruitment till the domicile law came into effect in Ladakh.

He added that they would move court to fight for the aspiring students. The chairmen of both hill councils had agreed to bear the court expenses, said Paljor. The student representative also said that they had approached J&K Bank HR president Tsetan Paljore and UT Ladakh zonal head Tsewang Dorjay in this regard.
