Srinagar, August 23

Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST) commemorated India’s first National Space Day by organising a one-day workshop on ‘Space exploration and its role in shaping sustainable development’. A statement by the varsity said the event was a collaboration between the Department of Planning & Geomatics, and Dean of Students, IUST.

The keynote address was delivered by Humayun Rashid, former scientist at the Directorate of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing, J&K. He discussed the evolution of space technology in the region and its applications across various sectors. In his inaugural address, the guest of honour, Prof Wahid Makhdoomi, Registrar, IUST, underscored India’s achievements in space exploration, including the success of Chandrayaan-3.

Dr Tariq Abdullah, HoD, Planning and Geomatics, emphasised the university’s commitment to advancing geospatial technology and contributing to national space initiatives.

Dr Asifa Mehraj Baba, Dean of Students, highlighted the importance of fostering student engagement in space sciences. The event saw participation from university officials, deans, faculty members, scholars and students.
