Gunfight breaks out between terrorists, forces in Udhampur

An encounter broke out between security forces and a group of armed ultras in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district on Tuesday evening.

After an input received by the police, a search operation was launched in Thanda Pani Khaned area under the jurisdiction of the Basantgarh police station. The group is believed to have been freshly infiltrated from the International Border.

Rayees Mohammad Bhat, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Udhampur-Reasi range, said: “After specific input regarding the movement of ultras in the area, our parties launched a search and destroy operation (SADO) in the wee hours today. Contact has been established with a group of terrorists in the Khaned area”.

Basantgarh falls on the traditional route of Pakistani terrorists who infiltrate from the International Border in Kathua and travel to Doda, Ramban, Reasi or towards Kashmir region. The operation was going on in the forest area of Basantgarh.

A spokesperson for the Jammu Police said based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists, a joint search operation was launched by security forces in Thanda Pani Khaned.

“Contact has been established and few rounds have been fired from both sides. Area has been cordoned off,” the spokesperson said.

Sources said the group of around 3-4 terrorists, who were armed with AK series and M-4 rifles, was believed to be highly trained due to the tactical positions they tried to keep during the encounter.

2 women HURT in blast near Army camp

Srinagar: Two women were injured in an explosion near a camp of the security forces in Kupwara district on Tuesday, officials said. The injured women have been identified as Nahida Akther and Afroza Begum, both residents of Chek Keegam in the Gujarpati area of Kupwara, they said. Officials said the injured women were taken to a hospital in Handwara where they were referred to a hospital in Srinagar for advanced medical care. Police are probing the cause of the blast, officials added. PTI
