A former Village Defence Guard (VDG) was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the forest area of Udhampur district, police said on Tuesday.

“The body of 46-year-old Ashok Kumar was found in Chapper area of Latti tehsil along with his .303 rifle at around 6.30 pm on Monday. Kumar was missing from his home since early morning and the family members were trying to trace him when the report that his body was lying in the forest area was received,” they said.

After receiving information, a police team was rushed to the spot. It took the body into possession and sent it for post-mortem examination. A case was also registered after which investigation have been initiated to know if there was any foul play, police said.

“The deceased was identified as Ashok Kumar, son of Romal Chand. Accordingly, inquest proceeding was initiated and police carried out preliminary investigation which suggested that the death was caused by a gunshot. The facts ascertained so far rule out any terror angle,” said a senior police officer.

He said that based on the initial investigation, FSL examination and post mortem examination, it appears to be a case of suicide. However, further investigations are ongoing.
