Create nurseries for sea buckthorn, Ladakh Adviser directs officials
The Adviser to the Lieutenant Governor, Ladakh, Pawan Kotwal chaired a significant meeting regarding the promotion, preservation and marketing of sea buckthorn.
The meeting commenced with a comprehensive power-point presentation by Director, Industries and Commerce, covering key aspects including introduction of sea buckthorn, marketing, action plan for promotion and preservation and methods to boost it’s production.
During the meeting, discussions and deliberations were held on the requirement of modern techniques and methods to improve its harvesting in Ladakh.
Ladakh is harvesting 5-6 per cent sea buckthorn annually. Over 660 metric tons was harvested by berry collectors in the year 2024, while 315 MT was harvested in the year 2023.
Keeping in view the financial and medicinal value of sea buckthorn, Pawan Kotwal instructed the officials to create nurseries on 20 hectares of land for its promotion in Ladakh. In this regard, Adviser directed District Magistrate, Leh, to identify the land for the sea buckthorn nursery. Additionally, the Adviser emphasised that creation of fire lines is an imperative for the protection of the berry.
The meeting discussed the bottleneck areas, including the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and buyers engaged in berry processing, explore strategies for enhancing harvesting tools and methods.
