Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday said three drug peddlers have been arrested, including a Special Police Officer, in North Kashmir.

The police said in a statement that continuing its unwavering efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs from society, the police arrested three drug peddlers in north Kashmir’s Handwara and recovered contraband from their possession.

The police said a team of Handwara police established a checkpoint at Ananwan Crossing Kralgund in Handwara and during checking, three persons were apprehended.

They were identified as Irshad Ahmad Gazi, Sajad Ahmad Rather and Syed Anwar Geelani (SPO) presently posted at Kupwara.

“During their search, 105 gm of contraband charas-like substance was recovered from their possession. All the accused were arrested on the spot,” the police spokesperson said.

He said a case under relevant Sections of law has been registered at police station Kralgund and an investigation has been initiated.

The police also requested community members to “come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood.”

“Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt with as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drugs,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested two drug peddlers in Baramulla district and recovered contraband substance from their possession.

A police spokesperson said a police party of police station Baramulla intercepted one vehicle and apprehend two persons. “During search, 25 gm of contraband — a brown sugar-like substance — was recovered from their possession. They have been arrested and shifted to police station Baramulla. Their vehicle was also seized,” the police said, adding that a case under relevant Sections have been registered at police station Baramulla and investigation has been initiated.
