A day after the Ladakh police registered an FIR against Congress councillor for his alleged controversial remarks on the India-China standoff, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil today suspended the councillor with immediate effect.

The councillor, who has been arrested by the police and expelled by the Congress from the party’s basic membership, is likely to be removed from the Council.

On Friday, the Ladakh police registered an FIR against the Congress councillor Zakir Hussain after his audio clip went viral in social media wherein he is allegedly heard using objectionable remarks against the Army and the country’s leadership.

“The Executive Council, in one voice, condemned the views expressed by the councillor in the strongest possible terms. It was an act of an individual who is being dealt as per the law of the land,” Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Kargil Feroz Ahmad Khan said while chairing a meeting of the executive councillors in Kargil town today.

“Keeping in view the information received from the District Magistrate Kargil, the Executive Council decided that the Councillor shall stand suspended from the LAHDC Kargil with immediate effect. The formal orders in this regard would be issued by the District Magistrate,” Khan said, adding that the Executive Council also discussed the removal of a member from the Council.

On Friday, the Ladakh unit of the BJP, led by Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, had staged a strong protest and raised slogans against the Congress leadership, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, demanding stern action against the Council.
