BRO seeks L-G Mishra’s intervention to resume work on border roads in Ladakh

Jammu, July 10

A delegation comprising Chief Engineer, Project Vijayak, Brigadier Vinay Bahl and Chief Engineer, Project Himank, Brigadier Vishal Srivastava, called on L-G Brigadier BD Mishra (retd) and informed him about issues being faced in construction of roads in border areas of Ladakh.

Brig Vinay Bahl raised the issues faced by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in the construction of new roads along with the widening of existing roads in the border areas of Ladakh. He also informed the L-G about the clearance taken by them from the Wildlife Board for the construction and widening of the said roads but direction received from the Wildlife Department of Ladakh to stop the construction and widening of the road.

Brig Bahl apprised the L-G of some issues faced by them in completing the said project within the stipulated time frame and requested his intervention in this regard. Brig Srivastava also apprised the L-G of the issue faced by them in the construction of new roads in the Changthang area.

The L-G asked Brig Bahl and Brig Srivastava to meet Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Brij Mohan Sharma to find a viable solution to address their issues as these projects will not only benefit the people of Ladakh but also the country on the security front.

Meanwhile. a delegation from IIT-Madras led by Professor Sachin S Gunthe called on the L-G Mishra and took stock of the Sindhu Central University.

Prof Sachin informed the L-G that he is the Faculty Coordinator for Sindhu Central University while IIT Madras and IIT-Kanpur are the mentor institutes. He also informed the L-G that the delegation is in Ladakh to take stock of the situation of the university. He further informed that the work on the university is progressing well and the transit camp of the Central University should be complete by August-end.

Prof Sachin informed the L-G that the target date for the completion of the University is within four years. Prof Sachin also informed about the plan to conduct a joint venture with University of Ladakh.

Issues such as utilising wind energy on the University of Ladakh campus for research purposes; preference for Ladakhi students and faculty members in Sindhu Central University; reservation for local students at University of Ladakh among others were also discussed in the meeting.
