Within months after the macadamisation of road under the flagship scheme, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), in villages/areas of Arnia Block of Jammu district, the uprooting of black-topping has exposed the poor execution of work by the executing agencies to provide all-weather road connectivity in rural areas.

Dept will look into the matter

  • The issue will be taken up on a priority basis. The department will definitely look into every aspect as to why the road was damaged in such a short period of time. I shall send the officials concerned to the spot to find out the exact reasons behind the poor condition of the road. Des Raj Bhagat, chief engineer, pmgsy

After The Tribune carried a story regarding poor implementation of the flagship scheme in its January 6, 2020 edition, a few of the locals have called the office. During an interaction with a few of the people from the village as well as the adjoining areas, it came to light that the black topping of the road was completed in November 2019.

A visit to the road connecting Shibu Chak village to Chimne Chak was enough to witness the pathetic condition of road, which according to the locals of the areas was less than two months old. “Is this the road connectivity we the people from villages require where macadamisation of the road is done by the department concerned just for the sake of formality? When the PMGSY board is installed, full details have been mentioned ranging from start of the execution of work to name of the contractor, total cost of the project but in actual terms, it is all fraud. When the black topping layer was being laid on the 3-km road stretch, connecting both villages, we already knew that it will not last long and today the poor condition of road has proved us right”, a student from Shibu Chak village said.

Executing agencies befooling people

  • Executing agencies being involved in the projects are actually befooling the people in the name of better road connectivity. The truth is that, the exact amount to be spent on macadamisation of roads under the PMGSY were utilised in most of the cases. It seems as if there is nexus between the contractors and executing agencies. — A local
