They said Pakistan violated the ceasefire around 2 pm and targeted Indian posts and civilian areas in several villages along the LoC.

Srinagar-based defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation in Baramulla district.

“Three soldiers have been injured and the Army is retaliating befittingly,” the spokesman said. Sources said the two sides also exchanged heavy artillery fire.

Police officials in north Kashmir said three civilians, including a child (4), were also injured in the shelling in Churanda village. The injured have been identified as Tahira Begum, 20, Shanaz Akhter, 12, and Tauseef Ahmed, 4.

“The injured were shifted to Sub-District Hospital, Uri, and their condition is stable,” said a police officer. A house was also damaged in the shelling.

The exchange of firing continued for several hours and created panic in border villages but most of the people are confined to their homes in Hatlanga, Silikote and Tilawadi.

Meanwhile, a massive anti-militancy operation has started in Handwara forest after militants fired at a security patrol party.
