Jalandhar: Dr Harpreet Singh, head, department of bioinformatics, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, participated in an International Conference on Bioinformatics at YARSI University, Jakarta. He chaired two oral presentation sessions on the themes “Sequencing and NGS Data Analysis” and “Machine Learning, AI and Novel Algorithms”. His oral presentation on “Characterisation of cyclophilin gene family in wheat and its implications in heat stress response” was under research highlight track and was very much appreciated. He also took part as a panelist, representing India, in the special breakout session on “Building a Regional Galaxy Community and Platform”. Dr Harpreet also attended the hands-on workshop “An introduction to the galaxy platform for computational biology” during this conference.

Short-term course 

Jalandhar: TEQIP-III sponsored a one-week short-term course titled “Advancements in Manufacturing and Material Processing” organised by the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering, NIT Jalandhar, started on Thursday. The chief guest of the inaugural function was Prof Lalit K Awasthi, Director, NITJ. He extended a green welcome to the guests of honor prof Apurbba Kumar Sharma from IIT Roorkee and Dr Gaurav Verma, adjunct faculty at Panjab University, Chandigarh. The coordinators introduced the guests and provided an insight into the research avenues and advances in manufacturing and evolution of modern functional materials. Prof AK Sharma highlighted the need to understand the fundamentals of materials in order to bring breakthroughs in advanced material processing. He insisted participants to look for development of newer materials, which are sustainable and environmental friendly. Dr Gaurav Verma, who had been awarded CV Raman Post Doctoral Fellow to work at MIT, USA, enlightened the audience with the contemporary researcher’s intent to develop functional materials which are inspired from nature, citing the example of the human skin.
