Inter-state gang of weapon smugglers busted, 2 nabbed

The Police Commissionerate today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang involved in smuggling of weapons from Madhya Pradesh to Punjab with the arrest of two of its members.
Intercepted at naka
The operation was carried out by a police team of the CIA Staff, led by in-charge Surinder Kumar. Acting on a tip-off, the team laid a naka near McDonald’s on the Paragpur link road here late on Monday night. Jalandhar Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the suspects were intercepted near the Paragpur link road.
The suspects have been identified as Ajitpal Singh, alias Shalu, and Dilpreet Singh, both residents of Fatehgarh Churian in Gurdaspur district. The police also recovered a cache of illicit weapons, including 10 country-made pistols and 10 magazines, from their possession.

Jalandhar Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the suspects were intercepted near the Paragpur link road. During checking, illegal firearms were recovered from their possession.
The Police Commissioner said Ajitpal Singh and Dilpreet Singh travelled from Amritsar to Delhi and then proceeded to Indore, Madhya Pradesh. In Indore, they came in contact with their acquaintances facilitating the acquisition of the pistols.
“During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they bought each pistol for Rs 22,000. They were planning to sell it further between Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 in Ajnala,” he said.
CP Sharma further investigations were on to unravel potential connection with gangsters operating in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and other regions involved in the illegal arms trade.
He said the suspects were today produced in a court, which sent them to police remand. During remand, they would try to extract more information about the broader network.
Ajitpal Singh and Dilpreet Singh, who were friends for the past four to five years, had no history of arms smuggling. A case has been registered against them under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at the Jalandhar Cantt police station.
