Inmate dies in hospital, family demands probe
Gurdit Singh, a jail inmate died in Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) here today after he was referred from the Amritsar Central Jail in morning here today.
The family members of the deceased alleged that he was beaten up in the hospital and demanded investigations into his death.However, the jail authorities said that he was already facing acute health issues when he was brought in jail two weeks ago. He remained admit in the jail hospital during the period.
Rupinder Kaur, a relative of the deceased said that Gurdit was lodged in jail in a case. For one and half years he was bed ridden following a road mishap. He was unable to walk. He could not appear in the court because of this and they had applied for the bail. She alleged two weeks ago cops from proclaimed offender wing came to the house and forcibly took him away and send to jail. She said he had called from hospital that he was beaten up.
Superintendent jail said that Gurdit was brought to jail on September 13. His both legs were swollen apparently due to some surgery gone wrong. He was facing acute health issues. He remained admitted in the jail hospital and even sent to GNDH for treatment a couple of times. Today morning his condition deteriorated and he was immediately referred to GNDH hospital where he died.
The family members of the deceased demanded an inquiry into his death.
