Indo-Pacific new fulcrum of global geopolitics: Joint Secretary
Joint Secretary of the Indo-Pacific division of the Ministry of External Affairs, Paramita Tripathi, today said the Indo-Pacific region — home to over 60 per cent of the world population —had truly become the fulcrum of global geopolitics.
He was speaking during the valedictory session of two-day international conference on ‘Security, Climate Change and Sustainable Development in Indo-Pacific region’.
The International Centre for Indo-Pacific Studies, Kurukshetra University, in collaboration with the Indo-Pacific division of the Ministry of External Affairs, had organised the two-day conference at the university.
Tripathi said, “This conference became a platform to exchange ideas on the pressing challenges such as security, climate change and sustainable development, issues that are not only relevant to the Indo-Pacific region, but also have global implications.”
The Joint Secretary highlighted that this region faces various challenges ranging from geopolitical competition and territorial disputes to climate change and non-traditional threats such as illegal fishing, trafficking and piracy. There is an urgent need to build resilient and reliable supply chains in an era of increasing geopolitical uncertainty,” he added.
In his presidential remarks, KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva said, “The solution to problems lies in mutual cooperation, sustainability and respect towards one another. So we need to work across borders to find a solution.”
Prof MB Chetti, Vice-Chancellor, Sanskriti University, Chhata Mathura, Pawan Kumar Choudhry, Advisor to Chief Minister for Foreign Cooperation Department, Government of Haryana, Prof ADN Bajpai, Vice-Chancellor, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, were guests of honour. Conference Co-Convener Prof Sanjiv Bansal presented the report of the conference.
