West Bengal doctors urge President to step in
The protesting junior doctors in West Bengal today wrote to the President of India seeking her intervention in the RG Kar rape and murder case.
Hours later, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced Rs 2 lakh relief each to the kin of 29 persons who died allegedly for want of treatment owing to the ongoing “cease work” by the agitating doctors in Kolkata.
The doctors had yesterday stayed away from talks with Mamata after she refused to live-stream the proceedings.
“Your intervention in these trying times will act as a beacon of light to us all,” the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front urged President Droupadi Murmu in its letter, copies of which were also sent to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, PM Narendra Modi and Health Minister JP Nadda.
In a post, Mamata said: “It is sad and unfortunate that we have lost 29 precious lives due to disruption in health services because of long-drawn cease work by junior doctors.” In order to extend a helping hand to the bereaved families, the state government was announcing a token financial relief of Rs 2 lakh to family members of each deceased person, she added.
