A notorious cross-border narcotics smuggler, died on November 10 after spending several hours in the freezing Ichchamati river along the India-Bangladesh border, according to the BSF officials.

BSF officials confirmed the development to The Tribune and informed that the deceased person — identified as Babai Barai — was out on bail. He was trying to enter into the Indian territory.

Barai and his accomplice were fished out, taken to a BSF border outpost in Angrail in West Bengal’s North 24-Parganas district. Despite being given warm clothes and hot tea, Barai felt uneasy and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital, where he died.
