The Member of Parliament from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, alias Engineer Rashid, is set to return to the Tihar jail on October 28, the day the tenure of his interim bail ends in connection with a 2017 terror funding case.

Investigators say he is expected to return to jail at the end of his bail tenure. “There won’t be any need to arrest him as he is expected to return on his own,” a source said.

A Delhi court had earlier extended Rashid’s interim bail until October 28. He was being held in the Tihar jail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Earlier this month, a Patiala House court had passed the order to extend Rashid’s bail. He had applied for an extension of his bail citing the health of his father.

The interim bail was extended after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had said it had verified the documents and was not opposing the application. Rashid was first given bail last month to campaign in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. He was scheduled to surrender on October 3, but the court had extended his bail till October 13.

Rashid leads the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) and had successfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha as an Independent candidate from Baramulla. He had defeated National Conference leader and incumbent J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the AIP had fielded candidates from several seats in Jammu and the Kashmir valley, where the MP had campaigned extensively.
