Rahul Gandhi to visit Manipur today, may push for President’s Rule

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is all set to make his third trip to Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May last year. He will wind up his trip with a meeting with state Governor Anusuiya Uikey during which he might press her for bringing the state under the President’s Rule in view of the protracted ethnic violence.
PM Narendra Modi has so far not visited Manipur ever since trouble began in the northeastern state. This will be Rahul’s first visit as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Talking to The Tribune, Meghachandra Singh, president, Manipur Congress, said Rahul would first visit Dhalai in Cachar district of Assam, bordering Manipur, where some Hmar people (considered members of the larger Kuki community) in the Jiribam area of Manipur had taken shelter.
Rahul would then go to Jiribam and visit the relief camp set up in a school for the refugees of ethnic violence. From Jiribam, he would return to Silchar in Assam and fly to Manipur’s capital Imphal. Rahul would then visit a relief camp in Churachandpur where refugees belonging to the Kuki tribe had taken refuge and another camp at Moirang where Meitei refugees driven away from the Kuki-dominated areas of Manipur were staying, he said.
Later, in the day he would meet Governor Uikey. The last item on the Congress leader’s agenda was a press conference at the Congress office in Imphal, Singh added.
