President, Defence Minister pay homage to heroes of 1971 war

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday led the nation in paying homage to the soldiers of the 1971 war on Vijay Diwas, observed every year on December 16 to commemorate India’s historic victory over Pakistan.

In a post on X, the President said a grateful nation remembers the ultimate sacrifice of the bravehearts, whose stories continue to inspire every Indian and remain a source of national pride.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar described the soldiers’ heroic valour and selfless sacrifice as a source of inspiration for every Indian, adding that the country will forever remain indebted to their service.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the courage and sacrifices of the soldiers, stating that their selfless dedication and unwavering resolve safeguarded the nation and brought it glory. He described Vijay Diwas as a day to honour their extraordinary valour and unshakable spirit.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid a wreath at the National War Memorial to pay his respects. Wreaths were also laid by Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru.

The Defence Minister said the courage and patriotism of the soldiers ensured the nation’s safety, adding that India would never forget their sacrifice and service.
