PM to auction mementoes to support Namami Gange initiative
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of an e-auction featuring over 600 gifts and mementoes received during various public events, with proceeds supporting the Namami Gange initiative.
In a social media post on X, PM Modi wrote, "Every year, I auction the various mementoes I receive during public programmes. The proceeds of the auction go to the Namami Gange initiative. I’m delighted to share that this year’s auction has opened. Do bid for the mementoes you find interesting!"
The auction, which runs from September 17 to October 2, showcases a diverse range of items representing India's cultural, spiritual and historical heritage. Hosted by the Union Ministry of Culture, the auction includes notable artefacts like a replica of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, with a base price of Rs 5.5 lakh, and sports memorabilia from Paralympic athletes, including Ajeet Singh Yadav’s silver medal-winning javelin shoes, with bids starting at Rs 8.3 lakh.
“These gifts symbolise remarkable achievements and personal stories that inspire us all,” said Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, speaking at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), where 100 of the 600 items are currently on display. The exhibition features traditional art, tribal artefacts, ceremonial swords, and khadi shawls, among others.
Shekhawat emphasised the significance of the auction, noting, “It’s not just about acquiring unique items; it’s about contributing to a cause. The funds will support the Namami Gange project, which reflects our commitment to environmental conservation.”
Since its inception in 2019, the auction of PM Modi’s mementoes has raised Rs 54 crore for the National Ganga Fund, which aids efforts to clean and preserve the Ganga. Urging the public to participate, Shekhawat added, “Every bid strengthens our resolve to protect our environment and heritage.”
The auction can be accessed online at pmmementos.gov.in and will continue until October 2, offering bidders a chance to acquire unique pieces while supporting a crucial environmental cause.
