PM flags threat posed by AI, deepfakes at DGPs’ summit

PM Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed concern over the potential threats generated by digital frauds, cyber-crimes and artificial intelligence (AI), especially the potential of deep fake technology to disrupt social and familial relations.

During his valedictory address at the conclusion of the 59th conference of DGPs and IGs in Bhubaneswar, Modi also highlighted the need for expanding the focus on port security and preparing a future plan of action for it. His emphasis on port security comes following the alarming quantity of drug consignments having been intercepted from Gujarat’s Mundra port alone in the last three years.

In 2021, 2,988 kg of heroin — estimated to be worth Rs 21,000 crore — was seized at the Mundra port. In February this year, Indian agencies made their highest-ever narcotics bust from the sea as they seized 3,300-kg drugs, which was sailed from an Iranian port, off the Gujarat coast and arrested five foreigners from a dhow. The cache was estimated to be worth between Rs 1,300-Rs 2,000 crore in the international market.

Meanwhile, in-depth discussions were held on existing and emerging challenges to national security, including counter-terrorism, Left-wing extremism, cybercrime, economic security, immigration, coastal security and drugs trafficking.
