Over 850 IRS officers took VRS since 2014
As many as 853 officers of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) have taken voluntary retirement since 2014, with the trends continuing to hold. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in reply to a query in the Lok Sabha on Monday, said 20 IRS (Income Tax) Group-A officers took VRS in 2014 and the count stood at 57 in 2024.
Likewise, the IRS Customs and Indirect Taxes Officers Group-A who took VRS had risen from 24 in 2014 to 73 in 2024. Asked how many IPS and IAS officers took VRS, the minister said this data was not centrally maintained.
“Voluntary retirement of IAS and IPS officers is governed by Rule 16(2) and 16(2A) of the All-India Services (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, and state governments are the competent authority to accept voluntary retirement of IAS and IPS officers after completion of 30 years in service whereas Central Government is the competent authority after completion of 20 years of service (15 years in case of service borne on the cadre of Assam-Meghalaya, Manipur-Tripura, Nagaland and Sikkim),” said Chaudhary.
Twenty IRS (Income Tax) Group A officers take VRS in 2014; 19 in 2015; 14 in 2016, 15 in 2017, 35 in 2018, 31 in 2019, 23 in 2020, 53 in 2021 58 in 2022, 58 in 2023; 57 in 2024.
Besides, 24 IRS (Customs and Indirect Taxes) Group A officers took VRS in 2014, 30 in 2015, 40 in 2016, 30 in 2017, 45 in 2018, 61 in 2019, 32 in 2020, 30 in 2021, 49 in 2022, 56 in 2023 and 73 in 2024.
