New Delhi, July 5

TMC MP Mahua Moitra’s remark against National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma has led to a controversy. The comment was made on a video showing Sharma’s arrival at the site of the Hathras stampede, where a man can be seen holding an umbrella over her. The video, shared on X, prompted a social media user to question why Sharma couldn’t hold her own umbrella. In response, Moitra tweeted: “She (Rekha Sharma) is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas.”

The NCW quickly condemned Moitra’s comment, saying: “The NCW has taken suo moto cognisance of the derogatory remark made by Mahua Moitra, Member of Parliament, against Rekha Sharma, Chairperson, NCW. The crude remarks are outrageous and a violation of a woman’s right to dignity. NCW requests strict action against Moitra.”

The NCW has demanded that an FIR be registered against Moitra and a detailed action report be submitted within three days. In retaliation, Moitra wrote: “Come on @DelhiPolice, please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest. Also @DelhiPolice while you’re at it can you please register an FIR against another serial offender under your new Act. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella,” she tweeted, sharing screenshots of various posts by Rekha.
