During a day-long visit to Gujarat today, Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi met party workers in Ahmedabad and said the Congress party would defeat the BJP in Gujarat in the 2027 Assembly elections, in the same manner as it had done in temple town of Ayodhya in the recent Lok Sabha poll.

His visit follows a recent clash between Congress and BJP workers outside the Gujarat Congress headquarters, allegedly sparked by Gandhi’s “anti-Hindu” remarks in his Parliament speech. The police arrested five Congress workers following the altercation.

Remembers Mahatma

Our greatest leader, who showed us the way during British rule, was Mahatma Gandhi. If the Congress exists today, it is because the ideology and thinking began in Gujarat. —Rahul Gandhi, Lok sabha, LOP

“Congress will win Gujarat, and from Gujarat, a new Congress party will emerge. Where was Congress formed? Our greatest leader, who showed us the way during British rule, was Mahatma Gandhi. He gave us the slogan of daro mat, darao mat (do not fear, do not frighten) from Gujarat. If the Congress exists today, it is because the ideology and thinking began in Gujarat,” Rahul told party workers in Ahmedabad.

He added: “They have challenged us. We will defeat Modi and BJP in Gujarat just like we did in Ayodhya.”

Gandhi repeated his claim that Modi had wanted to contest from Ayodhya instead of Varanasi. He added that three surveys were conducted and all of them revealed that he would lose if he stuck to Ayodhya. Eventually, Modi ran away to Varanasi, from where he barely managed to save himself, the LoP said.

In his speech, Gandhi further elaborated on the sentiments in Ayodhya, stating: “The farmers of Ayodhya had lost their land when the airport was built. The people of Ayodhya were upset that no one from Ayodhya was invited to the inauguration of the Ram Temple. The movement that was initiated by Advani ji, centred around Ayodhya, has been defeated by the INDI alliance in Ayodhya.”

Gandhi said Modi’s bubble had already burst and his time was up. He added that the people of Gujarat had suffered and borne a lot of humiliation and indignity under the BJP rule.
