New Delhi, August 28

Wednesday turned out to be an action-packed day in Kolkata with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee making speeches on the occasion of the foundation day of the TMC’s student wing at Mayo Road even as the BJP called a 12-hour strike in protest against the alleged police excesses against the protesters in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Mamata took to X and announced, “Today, I dedicate Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to our sister, whose shocking death at RG Kar Hospital a few days ago left us all saddened.”

The CM wrote, “To all women of all ages across India who have been subjected to such inhumane acts, I am sorry with all my heart.”

Speaking at the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) rally in Kolkata, Mamata, referring to the turbulent ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ undertaken by the BJP on Tuesday, said the BJP tried to “divert the real issue”. “The police showed a lot of restraint and did not step into the trap laid out by the BJP,” she said and promised passing a Bill within 10 days so that rapists were hanged. She flayed Governor CV Ananda Bose who had been accused of sexual assault by a member of Raj Bhavan staff.
