India stands for peaceful, inclusive Syrian-led political process: MEA
India, in its first reaction to the developments in Syria, on Monday said it stood for a “peaceful and inclusive” Syrian-led political process that would respect the interests and aspirations of all sections of society in that country.
The Ministry of External Affairs said, “We advocate a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process respecting the interests and aspirations of all sections of Syrian society.”
The MEA said the situation in Syria was being monitored, adding, “We underline the need for all parties to work towards preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.”
This is first reaction from New Delhi since President Bashar al-Assad fled the country as the capital city of Damascus was ‘taken over’ by the rebels. Al-Assad has been give asylum in Russia.
Opposition-backed armed rebels have overthrown the regime of the Assad family that has been ruling the country for 53 years and faced allegations of running the country in an autocratic manner.
The MEA said the Indian Embassy in Damascus is in contact with the Indian community, for their safety and security.
On December 6, the Indian Embassy in Damascus had issued an advisory asking Indian nationals to avoid all travel to Syria, until further notification. It asked those in Syria to observe utmost precaution about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum.
Indians currently in Syria were requested to remain in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus at their emergency helpline number +963 9933 85973 (also on WhatsApp) and email ID hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in for updates.
