India seeks UN aid for biodiversity action plan

India has sought financial assistance and technology transfer from developed countries to implement biodiversity action plans.

The biodiversity action plan of India aims to restrict the human induced extinction of animal species and bring down marine pollution by 2030. It has also set an aim to bring the loss of areas of high biodiversity importance, including ecosystems of high ecological integrity, close to zero by 2030.

Delivering India’s national statement at the 16th UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Cali, Colombia, Minister of State for Environment Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh said it was necessary to provide means of implementation, including financial resources as laid down in Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, for the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.

“Lot of ground needs to be covered in providing easily accessible means of implementation i.e financial resources, technology and capacity building needs with the requisite speed, scope and scale,” he said.
