Gujarat cop held from Punjab over MBA student's murder in Ahmedabad road rage

A Gujarat police constable has been arrested for allegedly murdering a 23-year-old MBA student following an argument over rash driving in Ahmedabad, police confirmed on Wednesday.

Virendrasinh Padheriya, a constable with the Sarkhej police station in Ahmedabad, was apprehended in Punjab in connection with the murder of Priyanshu Jain, a second-year MBA student at the Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA), Superintendent of Police (Rural) Om Prakash Jat said.

A team from the Ahmedabad city crime branch tracked Padheriya to Punjab, where he had fled after the crime. He is now being brought back to Ahmedabad, with the team expected to arrive on Thursday, Jat added.

Priyanshu Jain, a resident of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, was killed in a road rage incident on Sunday night. Jain was on his way back to the MICA hostel with a friend after buying a cake from a local pastry shop in the Bopal area of Ahmedabad when they had a heated argument with the driver of a speeding car.

According to the police, the car driver became agitated and followed the students for approximately 200 meters. The driver then pulled out a knife from his vehicle and fatally stabbed Jain.

Jain was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

On Tuesday, the Ahmedabad rural police released a sketch of the suspect and appealed for public help in identifying the killer, assuring anonymity for anyone providing information.

The suspect has been charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and for contravening police orders under Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act.
