Amid concerns over infiltration through the India-Bangladesh border, the menace of misinformation and fake videos is emerging as another challenge for security forces. It is leading to rumour-mongering and communal flare-ups.
According to security officials, around four to five videos are prominently being circulated in the border region, which falls under the eastern command of the BSF.
These videos are communally provocative and have been flagged by security forces as potentially damaging for the overall law and order situation. Besides, these videos have provocative content like sexual violence against women, bodies of Rohingya refugees and people crossing the border. Security forces have claimed that these were old and misleading, and were being circulated deliberately with the aim of fanning communal passions.
BSF officials are holding regular meetings with local villagers across the entire border region on a day-to-day basis. Residents are being sensitised about such fake videos. A senior official said that villagers were being cautioned not to circulate such videos to maintain communal amity.
