A DNA report relating to the probe into the trainee doctor’s rape-murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is learnt to be ready and, according to sources, has ruled out gang-rape. This indicates that arrested accused Sanjay Roy could be the lone suspect in the August 9 gruesome crime that shook the nation and triggered widespread protests.

A former civic volunteer with easy access to the state-run hospital, Roy (33) was arrested by Kolkata police on August 10. The 31-year-old doctor’s body was found in a seminar hall on the hospital’s fourth floor.

After initial investigation by the Kolkata police, the probe into the case was handed over to the CBI. The sources said the CBI was likely to soon reveal details of the DNA report, which had been sent to AIIMS-Delhi for further investigation.

Once AIIMS cleared the report, the CBI was likely to conclude its probe, which was at an advanced stage of completion, the sources said. Though the CBI has not said anything officially on the matter, it is learnt that Roy’s blood and skin samples had matched with the DNA samples collected from the crime scene.

To make its case foolproof, the CBI has sent the DNA report to AIIMS so that a watertight case could be presented before the court, the sources said. The CBI has recorded the statements of over 100 persons and conducted 10 polygraph tests so far. The agency is also probing alleged financial irregularities by Sandip Ghosh, who was the principal at RG Kar hospital when the incident occurred.
