Curbs kick in as Delhi air ‘severe’ again
As the air quality index (AQI) in the national capital continues to deteriorate and remained in the “severe” category for the second consecutive day on Thursday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has imposed restrictions under the third stage of the GRAP in Delhi-NCR from 8 am onwards tomorrow.
Over the past two days, Delhi recorded AQI levels of 418 and 424, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The CAQM has directed the Delhi and NCR authorities to halt physical classes for students up to Class V, shift to online mode of education and suspend construction, demolition and mining activities.
The restrictions also include banning BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles in Delhi and nearby districts of Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar. Interstate buses, barring those running on EV, CNG and BS-VI diesel technology, will be barred from entering Delhi. Diesel-operated medium goods vehicles (BS-III and below) registered in Delhi, apart from those transporting essential goods, are also restricted. Additionally, the CAQM ordered intensified road sweeping, dust suppression and enhanced public transport services to reduce vehicular emissions.
