The opposition Congress on Tuesday sought a discussion on the Constitution even as the government organised a grand function at the Central Hall of Parliament to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution.

The function was presided over by President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The Congress said it had written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in this regard.

The Samajwadi Party, meanwhile, boycotted the function as a mark of protest against the violence at Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh. Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said the Opposition had sought a two-day discussion on the Constitution in both Houses and had written to the Speaker and the Chairman in this regard.

“Today the Constitution Day is being celebrated all across India, but we want a discussion in both Houses for two days. We should express our feelings, commitment; a good message should go; the country should see…we demand the discussion. It is a very positive suggestion, the government should not hesitate,” Gogoi said.

Congress’ Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor said, “It was a nice, simple, dignified ceremony, but it would have been even better if we had a longer discussion where the opposition party could also have something to say, as the Constitution belongs to all of us. This ceremony is fine, no complaints.”
