Immunology: The Study of the Immune System

The immune system protects our body from invaders like germs. It acts as a protection shield against sickness and promotes healing when we are injured or unwell. The study of the immune system's structure, function, and disorders is known as immunology.

This field of science plays a crucial role in understanding conditions where the immune system's response is either overactive (as in allergies) or underactive (as in immunodeficiency disorders). Immunologists focus on different kinds of conditions, including autoimmune disorders, primary immunodeficiencies, and immunotherapy.

Common Immunological Conditions

Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and type 1 diabetes occur when the immune system attacks the body's tissues.

Immunodeficiency Disorders: This kind of disorder weakens the immune system's ability to defend against infections. Some of the examples of such disorders include HIV/AIDS or primary immunodeficiency disorders.

Hypersensitivity Reactions: Such immunological conditions include allergic reactions (Type I hypersensitivity) and other immune-mediated responses, including delayed hypersensitivity reactions.

Transplant Rejection: Immunologists play a critical role in understanding and managing immune responses after organ/ tissue transplantation.

Dr. Kanury Rao Educational Qualification

For immunologists, having an in-depth knowledge of their field is important. Kanury Rao

has a highly impressive educational background. He completed his graduation in science from the University of Pune Before beginning his career by joining Malti-Chem Research Centre, Dr. Rao completed his master's degree from the same university in 1979.

Subsequently, he completed his doctoral studies from Sukhdev at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, before moving to Johns Hopkins University to pursue post-doctoral studies at their Division of Environmental Chemistry. After working for two years there, he joined the laboratory of Fred C. Fox at the University of California and worked there for three more years.

While working in the lab for around three years, Dr Rao enhanced his knowledge. After coming back to India, he started working as a research scientist and assistant at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in different roles. Later, in 1994, he started to work as the Immunology Group’s Group Leader.

Dr Rao is known for his contributions to the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the diagnostics of HIV/AIDS. While working at ICGEB, the group developed an electronic nose and a urine test to monitor the progress of tuberculosis therapy.

Dr. Kanury Rao- Beyond Direct Interactions with Patients

Beyond direct communication with patients, Kanury Rao also contributed to society through his advanced medical research, innovation, and initiatives for the betterment of society. He played a significant role in advancing medical knowledge and developing new treatments in the field of immunology while improving healthcare practices.

Dr Rao’s significant contributions to research earned him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, awarded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He was recognized with the National Bioscience Award for Career Development for his excellence and knowledge.
