Software and its development are recognized as crucial in technological development. It is normal to wonder how these software and applications are developed. Many people are astonished at the convenience these applications offer them.

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are software's major aspect, allowing them to communicate with other applications.

What is API?

An application programming interface (API) is a software tool that allows several software programs to relate to each other and establish strong communication between them. It helps improve an application's efficiency and establishes it as a complex entity.

APIs in Daily Life

APIs are a common part of the daily life of an average internet user. Some common life instances where API is utilized include:

  • Travel—Many travel applications utilize APIs for the services they offer to the user. APIs enable the user to know more about the status of their reservation, ticket availability, vacancies, etc. In the digital era, APIs are a crucial element, as travel is mainly managed through digital devices.
  • Weather—Many devices in homes and enterprises display weather conditions through APIs. It is one of the most basic and yet fundamental uses of APIs in daily life.
  • Payment—With the turn of the digital era, payments also received a digital boost. Hard cash is not depended upon as an emergency. Digital payments are prioritized by everyone. API in payment applications prevents the application from accessing only the relevant information.

Types of API Protocols

Effective exchange and command of data is the main purpose of an API. For doing these different sets of protocols are necessary. Some of the major API protocols are:

  • REST—Representational State Transfer is the most popular protocol for APIs. Because the front and back ends of the API are separated, RESTful APIs offer flexibility in their development.
  • RPC- Remote Procedural Call utilizes two types of languages- JSON and XML.
  • SOAP—Simple Object Access Protocol utilizes a wide range of communication protocols on the Internet. It is considered a convenient protocol for developers to add and delete features as they please.

Importance of API

Some of the main factors that make API an important element in software development are:

  • Scale- Software development is a game over data management. Establishing connections between applications requires the efficient management of data. The amount of data that must be scaled to establish a solid and secure connection is huge. APIs allow software to do this process more efficiently than other tools. REST APIs (Representational State Transfer) can help systems to scale data more accurately.
  • Flexible—APIs are more flexible in their approach to software development. They allow client-server separation, which enables the software to separate interactions efficiently.
  • Independent—Application Programming Interfaces are independent of the technology utilized in the development of the software. They can run smoothly anywhere and act as a translator between systems. They ultimately equip the software to run more smoothly.
  • Business- At an application level, the importance of APIs can be established through the several business applications they are utilized in. Hotels and travel businesses are a perfect example for the efficient use of APIs. Different rates and variations in services can be collected through APIs to exhibit in an application.
  • Web API- ASP.NET applications are common across the web as an extension of many applications. API are utilized in the development of these applications to make them more efficient and smarter in their services.
