IIT-M hosts open house demonstration showcasing innovative student projects
IIT, Mandi, today hosted its Open House Demonstration, featuring projects developed by second-year BTech students as part of the institute’s design practicum course.
The event, which focused on health tech, future tech, sustainability and advanced robotics, showcased 42 innovative prototypes designed to address real-world challenges.
Each student group was supported with Rs 30,000 to develop their projects. Through this initiative, IIT-Mandi aims to nurture entrepreneurial aspirations, with the top three projects receiving a development grant of Rs 2.5 lakh each from IIT-Mandi Catalyst, the institute’s flagship incubator. This grant will assist the winning teams in refining their prototypes and exploring commercialisation opportunities.
Among the standout projects was the flood monitoring system, a camera-based full-image system designed to provide real-time data on water levels, velocity and rainfall, offering critical insights for flood damage control.
Other notable prototypes included bone crack detection using microwaves, a safer alternative to X-rays; solar panel cleaning robots for efficient maintenance; climate-controlled agriculture with hydroponic system for sustainable farming; metal air battery for advanced energy storage; and robots for railway track inspection to improve maintenance.
IIT-Mandi Catalyst Director (Incubation) Dr Satvasheel Powar emphasised the institute’s commitment to fostering innovation, saying, “We aim to train our students in both science and entrepreneurship, equipping them to address critical societal issues with their research-based prototypes.”
Retd AVM Pranay Sinha, VSM, Strategic Advisor at IIT Mandi, officers from the Air Force, and faculty members from AIIMS, Bilaspur, were among those who attended the event.
Around 500 students from nearby schools visited the demonstration, sparking interest in technology development and entrepreneurship.
With a focus on real-world impact and entrepreneurial development, the open house demonstration highlighted IIT-Mandi’s dedication to cultivating future innovators and contributing to India’s growing start-up ecosystem.
