IAF off to a winning start in hockey
The Indian Air Force (IAF) got off to a winning start in the 41st Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament by defeating BSF, Jalandhar, (2-1).
Minister Mohinder Bhagat inaugurated the tournament at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium. He was welcomed by Himanshu Aggarwal, Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner and president of Surjit Hockey Society.
The inaugural match was played between Indian Navy and former winner Punjab and Sind Bank. The game was only played for 27 minutes when a technical fault occurred in the floodlights. As a result, the match could not be completed and the rest of the match will be played at 8 am on Sunday. Girls of St. Francis School, Kartarpur, presented giddha during the opening ceremony.
In a match played earlier in Pool A, BSF, Jalandhar, gave a tough fight to the IAF, but could not log win. In the 28th minute of the second quarter of the game, IAF’s Lavdeep Singh scored a penalty stroke to make the score 1-0. In the 54th minute of the game, BSF Jalandhar’s Gurjot Singh scored a penalty corner to make the score 1-1. In the last minute of the game, IAF’s Lavdeep Singh converted a penalty corner goal to win the match (2-1) and secure three points in the league round.
