BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has retracted her recent comments advocating for the reinstatement of three farm laws, which were repealed by the Centre following significant protests by the farm unions in 2021.

Her remarks, made during closing ceremony of a fair in Mandi, sparked backlash both from within the party and the public.

In a video statement released today, Ranaut expressed regret for any offence her words may have caused. “I withdraw my remarks. I have to remember that I am not just an artist, but a party worker of BJP. My actions must align with the party’s stance,” she stated. Ranaut emphasised the importance of respecting Prime Minister Modi’s decision to repeal the controversial laws, which were initially intended to benefit farmers but faced intense opposition.

Her comments at the fair had reignited a contentious issue, highlighting ongoing divisions within the farming community and among political leaders regarding the farm laws. The laws, which aimed to deregulate the agricultural market, faced fierce resistance from farmers who feared they would undermine their livelihoods.

After receiving sharp criticism from the party members, Ranaut quickly sought to clarify her position, indicating a desire to align with the BJP’s official viewpoint. This incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding agricultural policies in India and the potential consequences for political figures who express dissenting opinions.

Ranaut’s withdrawal of support reflects the BJP’s ongoing efforts to navigate the complex landscape of farmer relations, particularly as it prepares for future elections. The party is keen to maintain unity and support among its base while addressing the needs and concerns of the agricultural sector.
