There is a need to further strengthen the Himachal Pradesh Gyan Vigyan Samiti interventions on issues such as education, scientific awareness, environment, health, gender, and the growing problem of substance abuse among youth.

This was said by Dr Kuldeep Tanwar, founder president of the samiti, during his address at the 34th foundation day celebrations of the committee, recently held at Himachal Pradesh University.

Speaking at the event, state secretary Satyawan Pundir said the enthusiasm and energy of the workers increased when they encouraged and supported each other, advancing their efforts with sincerity.

The organisation was unique due to its rich legacy and collective working style, he added.

Special guest Dr PC Negi also praised the committee's efforts and said there was a need for society to prioritise issues related to health and the environment, areas in which the Gyan Vigyan Samiti excelled.

On this occasion, the committee also felicitated its senior members, aged over 80, with the Gyan Vigyan Samman.

Mandi Saksharta & Jan Vikas Samiti honoured

During the event, the Mandi Saksharta and Jan Vikas Samiti was honoured for its remarkable contributions to social development.

The award was presented to the founding members of the samiti — Kuldeep Guleria, Narpat Verma and Joginder Walia. Since its inception in 1992, the samiti has spearheaded numerous awareness campaigns across villages — focusing on issues such as literacy, post-literacy, continuous education, equality, health, sanitation, water sources, environmental conservation and drug prevention.

The body’s major achievements include organising over 8,000 street plays in the ‘Bantda’ style between 1992 and 1996, raising awareness on various social issues.

The samiti’s efforts in environmental awareness were particularly lauded, with the district being recognised as a national leader in creating a conducive atmosphere for environmental preservation.
