Hoshiarpur registers 62% polling, Jalandhar 58%, Kapurthala 55%
The Hoshiarpur district witnessed a voter turnout of 62.05 per cent, Jalandhar district 57.99 per cent and Kapurthala district 55 per cent voter turnout till 4 pm during the panchayat polls held today.
In Kapurthala district, 376 villages of the total 546 went to polls today, in which sarpanches of 190 villages were chosen unanimously. The total candidates in the fray for the post of sarpanch were 863 and for the panch there were 2,705 candidates. In Jalandhar district, of the total 695 panchayats, functionaries of 195 panchayats were elected unanimously. The polls were held today to elect 1,662 sarpanches and 5,464 panches in Jalandhar district.
In Nawanshahr district, of the total 466 panchayats, 330 went to the polls today. As many as 136 panchayats and 150 sarpanches and 1,762 panches of various villages were elected unanimously while a total of 746 sarpanches and 2,144 panches contested the elections.
In Hoshiarpur district, across 10 blocks there were 1,405 panchayats. As many as 2,730 candidates contested the poll for sarpanch while 6,751 candidates contested the poll for panch. As many as 265 panchayats were elected unanimously in the district.
Meanwhile, the polls across these districts were conducted amid foolproof security arrangements.
In Jalandhar, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal and SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh visited various polling stations to monitor the election proceedings, expressing satisfaction with the arrangements. Khakh informed that more than 2,500 police personnel had been deployed across the district to ensure peaceful voting.
