Hockey player, mother die in mishap near Jagraon

Hockey player Gurinder Pal Singh Waraich (22) and his mother Sarabjit Kaur died in a road mishap near Jagraon in Ludhiana district early on Wednesday morning.
A trainee of Mata Sahib Kaur Hockey Academy, Jarkhar, Gurinder, along with mother, was returning to his village, Waraich, after attending a marriage in Moga. When the car, in which they were travelling in, reached Pardesi Dhaba, it hit a stationary tractor-trailer. They died on the spot.
Gurinder had played in the state schools’ tournament and state championship, besides national competitions.
Last year, Gurinder represented PU in the All India Inter Varsity Hockey Tournament wherein he made his presence felt. Besides, he played a pivotal role in the hockey academy in winning the title in the prestigious All India Dasmesh Hawks Gold Cup Hockey Tournament in Ropar. He was adjudged the best player in this tournament.
Narinder Pal Singh, advocate Harkamal Singh and Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, chairman, president and chief organiser, respectively, of the Jarkhar Hockey Academy, along with other office-bearers and members, condoled the demise of the youth and his mother. — OC
