Hisar man gets Bar licence at 86

Umed Singh completed his Class X in 1960, and, after a gap of 56 years, Class XII in 2016

In an exemplary show of grit and determination, 86-year-old Umed Singh, a resident of Hisar, has obtained his Bar licence.

At an age when most people live retired lives, Singh embarked on a journey to becoming a lawyer, with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana recently giving him his licence to practice law.

Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, gave licences to 264 advocates at an event at Law Bhawan, Chandigarh, on Wednesday.

During the event, he was announced as the oldest person to receive the enrolment certificate at the programme.

As per the records of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, Umed Singh was born on December 12, 1938.

He completed his class X in 1960. Then, after a gap of over 56 years, he completed class XII in 2016.

He obtained a Bachelor in Arts degree from Kurukshetra University in 2019. After that, he decided to become a lawyer, and joined Chhaju Ram Law College, Hisar, and got an LLB degree from Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar, in 2023.

He applied for the Bar licence in August 2024.

Vijender Singh Ahlawat, Chairman, Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, said a total of 292 advocates were enrolled, out of which 264 were given licences by the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday.
