The long-awaited construction of the 220-metre Khalini-Talland flyover in the state capital is set to begin in November, following the award of the project tender by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). The Rs 17.97-crore project, part of the Smart City Mission, aims to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion between Khalini and Talland, particularly during peak office hours.

Vehicles heading to BCS and Talland will no longer need to pass through the heavily congested Khalini road, as commuters will have access to the new flyover, which will significantly reduce travel time and improve traffic flow.

CPWD Executive Engineer Naveen Kumar shared that the construction will be carried out in phases, starting with site inspections and parameter assessments. This will be followed by foundation preparation, the installation of steel girders, and deck construction, along with road strengthening, railings and safety barriers.

The use of steel for the flyover’s construction was chosen due to the challenging hilly terrain, making the structure lighter and more durable. Steel also minimises environmental impact and can be installed quickly, helping to mitigate risks like landslides in mountainous areas.

Originally planned to commence in January 2021, the project was delayed due to various factors, including necessary revisions to technical designs and inspections. Prior to the delay, the CPWD had already completed a five-metre road widening at Khalini Chowk.

Once completed, the flyover is expected to bring much-needed relief to daily commuters by easing traffic bottlenecks and improving the overall road infrastructure in the area.
